Sunday Schedule: Service of WorshipAll ages are welcome in worship at the Western Presbyterian Church. Care for children birth through 18 months is available in our nursery throughout the service. Care is provided for children 18 months and up in the Toddler Room. The nursery and toddler room are located upstairs in our Christian Education wing. Our service reflects our Presbyterian heritage while incorporating elements of the emerging ecumenical consensus on Lord’s Day worship. Our worship calendar is shaped by the Christian Calendar and thus includes observances of such special seasons and days as Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. A bulletin is provided for each service and is available from the ushers at each entrance to the sanctuary. The hymnal in the pew rack contains hymns, sung responses, and our liturgical items as noted in the bulletin. The selection of Scripture Readings for each Sunday reflects our pastor’s adherence to the Common Consensus Lectionary-a schedule of readings agreed upon by most Protestant churches. Use of the lectionary allows the Sunday School to use those readings as the basis for lessons. Thus, children are introduced to the readings during Church School at 9:30 a.m. and the lessons are reinforced and expanded upon during worship. A Children’s Sermon is offered for all interested children. Children are invited to join the pastor on the stairs leading to the chancel (i.e., the raised platform in the front of the sanctuary). The Sermon is prepared by our pastor each week to illuminate and offer applications of the Scriptures read that morning. Prayers for the church, the world, those in need and ourselves are offered during the Prayers of Intercession. If you would like us to pray for someone you know, or yourself, please fill out the “In Need of Prayer” card located in your pew and drop it into the collection plate. We pray the Lord’s Prayer using the phrase “forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” An Offering is collected each week to support the work of God’s Kingdom here and throughout the world. Sacraments Baptism signifies the faithfulness of God, the washing away of sin, rebirth, putting on the fresh garment of Christ, being sealed by God’s Spirit, adoption into the covenant family of the Church, resurrection and illumination in Christ. Those baptized as children are nurtured by the church and, when of age, called upon to make public their personal profession of faith. Baptisms are ordinarily administered on the 3rd Sunday of the month. The Sacrament of Baptism is an essential part of the ministry of the Church. However, salvation is not limited to those who have been baptized! If you wish to be baptized or have your child baptized, you should speak with our pastor. The Lord’s Supper is a meal through which we participate in the body and blood of Christ, are lifted into Christ’s presence, and are united with all the faithful in heaven and on earth. All who trust (or wish to trust) in Jesus- children and adults-are invited to partake of the Supper. One need not belong to a church to share the Supper with us. Worshippers are served as they remain in their pews. The bread and wine (unfermented grape juice) are held by each individual until the pastor indicated that it is time to commune. 2006 Average Worship Attendance
