Worship Committee (2006)

The year began on a high note. Unlike last year, where we scrambled to fill the pulpit due to the loss of our Pastor, we had an Interim Pastor in place. Rev. Stuart Waddles served as our Pastor throughout the year. He offered guidance and direction to the Worship Committee as well. As with any new Pastor, Stuart brought with him a style that offered a few differences from what we were used to on Sunday. Once their relevance to the Book of Order was explained, these differences were better understood.

The Committee has been working with Pastor Stuart to better define and understand its duties and responsibilities.

We were pleased to see that it wasn’t necessary to fill any position vacancies, that fall under our committee, during the year. The Director of Music/ Choir Director (Dave Smith), Accompanist (Jack Moak), Organist (Barb Gabriel), Flower Chair (Rochelle Morse) and Wedding Coordinator (Kathryn Hutton) all performed admirably. Tammy Abbott did a superb job of scheduling ushers and our youth candle lighters for the 11:00 service. Mary Beth LaBerge (as she’s done for how many years now?) arranged for readers and communion elders. They all deserve our thanks.

The Committee saw to it that the Pulpit was filled when Pastor Stuart couldn’t lead us in Worship. We also arranged for the installation of new Elders. The paraments, that dress the Lectern and Pulpit, were changed as directed by the liturgical calendar.

A number of cost savings measures have been taken. We cancelled our subscription for children’s bulletins. There is a large supply of them on hand, and we will work with Christian Ed to assure they are available in the future. Ellen, our secretary, has offered to print our Sunday bulletin covers from her computer, to eliminate our having to purchase them. As in past years, you may have found the sanctuary’s temperature cooler than desirable. This was done in cooperation with the Property Committee to help lower our utility bill.

One of our most important undertakings during the year was the review and updating of our wedding policy. The process isn’t complete, but with the input of all involved we expect to have a revised policy in place by Spring.

Worship took on a Spanish flair, as we celebrated Mexico Mission Sunday in February. Randy Kennard, Jean Dyer Yost and Heather Dyer coordinated this effort to honor our relationship with our Mexican sister Church. And, our Sunday School children, under the guidance of their teachers, presented a wonderful Christmas pageant.

We sponsored a series movie nights to correspond with Lent, and a soup and bread supper on Maundy Thursday. The Committee also hosted a Thanksgiving Day Worship service. A continental breakfast was served, followed by a brief but moving service conducted by members of the Congregation.

An ongoing task is the recreation of our Favorite Hymn book. This was a booklet listing favorite hymns of members of our Congregation. In years past, we would incorporate these hymns into our Sunday Worship Services. Along with the hymn, the person/s name/s would appear next to them in the bulletin. Look for more information concerning this.

We were blessed with cooperation from parishioners at St. Annes, regarding the use of our parking lot. This has been a problem in the past, but Pastor Stuart took the lead and expressed our concerns to their leadership.

The Worship Committee is pleased to submit this report, knowing that God has blessed us, and been with us to guide our thoughts and efforts.

Respectfully submitted,
The Worship Committee
